In the near future, humanity builds its first true superintelligence, a vast quantum neural network that is actively ingesting the internet ten times a second.

But it's gone mysteriously quiet. Everything goes in. Nothing comes out.

In desperation, the company hunts down the son of the missing architect, hoping he might know something they don't ...

This is the story of how Connor tries to make contact with an inconceivable new power, to work out whether it can be trusted, before the choice is lost forever. In the process, his notions of right and wrong, truth, responsibility, and even reality itself, are turned upside down.

About me

A technology geek who's been trying to finish his debut novel for fifteen years now. In the meantime, I also became a software developer and picked up a wife and two daughters. I work remotely from a small New Zealand town called Raglan, and spend my free hours "throwing the kids around" (as they call it), playing video games, surfing, gardening, golfing, and trying not to think about death.

The Light has been a long and arduous journey, with many false starts, and at least two front-to-back rewrites. A single nugget of an idea kept me going: We build a powerful new AI, we expect it to be another useful new tool, but then that first moment of contact turns out to be something wholly and wildly unexpected...

I also like moral philosophy. Like, what if there are correct answers to moral questions? What if the question 'what should I do with my life?' has a 'best' answer? What if we built something that could answer it?

Progress in AI has really been taking off. My daughters have a very interesting century ahead!
